Stem distance as an explanatory variable for the spatial distribution and chemical conditions of stand precipitation and soil solution under beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) trees

The partitioning of bulk precipitation (PR) in forest ecosystems and its chemical composition depends on both meteorological factors, such as amount intensity, evaporation rate, wind speed, stand structural density, canopy structure, bark texture, spatiotemporal distribution density foliage. We analysed fluxes water element contained therein a mature European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) sandy soils northeastern Germany. applied radially symmetrical setup within stem distance gradient to measure (SP) with components throughfall (TF) stemflow (SF), well soil moisture, the solution, chemistry, fine root distribution. analysis constituents covered macroelements (Ca, Mg, K, Na, Al, Fe, Mn, Si, S, P), cations anions NH4+, NO3–, Cl-, SO42-, few heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn). With an average PR 620 mm a-1, resulted 79% TF, 6% SF, 15% interception. TF volume increased during summer, but decreased winter. Clear spatial gradients increasing concentrations from PR, different classes trunk decreased, SF were observed for nearly all elements. contact leaves structures alters by transferring elements dry deposition or leaching intracellular materials leads input larger amounts SP into soil. Spatial patterns thus affect variation constituents, which also affects roots and, at least phases, topsoil solution.
